Somali National Blood Bank Officially Operational, Health Minister First to Donate

Mogadishu, Monday, 26 August 2024; In a significant step forward for Somalia’s healthcare system, the Minister of Health & Human Services of the federal government of Somalia, Dr. Ali Haji Adam, announced that the National Blood Bank is now fully equipped and operational. Speaking at the blood bank’s headquarters, Dr. Ali stated, “We will no longer see people searching for blood donors on social media during emergencies, as the National Blood Bank is now functional and ready to serve the needs of all Somali citizens.”

The National Blood Bank was officially inaugurated by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre in mid-2023, but has now reached the point of full readiness and capability. In a symbolic gesture, Dr. Ali became the first Somali citizen to register and store his blood in the national registry.

“I urge all Somalis, especially those with rare blood types, to come forward and donate their blood to the National Blood Bank,” Dr. Ali said. “By building a comprehensive national blood supply, we can ensure critical life-saving resources are available when needed most.”

The establishment of the Somali National Blood Bank marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and improve access to essential medical services for all citizens. The Ministry of Health is committed to continued investment and expansion of the blood bank to serve the needs of the Somali people.
