International Day of Midwives commemoration in 2023

The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Health and Human Services, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, attended the annual World Midwives Day event on May 5th.

The event was attended by the Minister of State for the Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr Maryama Mohamed Hussein, as well as senior advisors, Ministry of Health officials, doctors, and other distinguished guests.

The minister emphasized the significance of midwives and their crucial role in reducing maternal and infant mortality, noting that Somalia has not yet attained this objective.

Twenty-five (25) midwifery students graduated from the Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Human Services Midwifery Training School in Mogadishu as part of the event.

Finally, the Minister of Health thanked UNFPA for its invaluable assistance in training highly qualified midwives and reducing maternal and infant mortality. All of these factors contribute to improved maternal and infant health.
