The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Health and Human Services, Dr. Ali Haji Aden, and the Global Partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative(GPEI), including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), launched the Rapid Action Plan for the elimination of measles.
Coordination of polio elimination efforts towards the goals of the Inclusive Health System commences immediately in the entirety of Somalia by bolstering the routine vaccination service. On the other hand, there will be an on-site surveillance system for laboratory tests, as well as surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases, in order to control the spread of cVDPV2 and to be able to respond quickly in case of an emergency.
The implementation of the polio transition plan is the best step ever taken in response to this issue, which is a serious problem for the Somali community and could lead to future responses to polio and other preventable diseases in the country. As the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare places a high priority on the protection of future generations, both now and in the distant future, this policy is in place.
These efforts will assist Somalia in achieving and aligning its current work on polio eradication with its national development objectives, such as the National Development Plan (NDP)-9, a roadmap to achieving Universal Health Coverage, the Foundation Package of Health Services (EPHS) 2020, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the 2030 Agenda for Immunization.
